Since there are many antivirus software's available, choosing  a particular software can be difficult.  The following factors have to be considered before selecting a particular software:

1. Effectiveness in detecting viruses, Trojans and Spyware

2. System resources required - some software takes up a lot of system memory and the computer becomes very slow.

3. Cost of  the software - for home applications, an expensive antivirus software may not be required, you can free software

4. Your internet surfing habits, some websites are more likely to cause downloads of viruses and Spyware on your computer.

Free antivirus software to remove viruses from your computer

Most companies will offer the software free for a trial period, usually a month. Some of  the advantages and disadvantages of  widely used antivirus software's are:

1. AVG Antivirus from Grisoft - can detect most viruses and regular updates are available at the website.  The home edition is free and it does not take up too many system resources. This is the most widely used antivirus software. Updates are available almost daily.

2. Norton Antivirus has additional networking features and includes a firewall. However, it takes up a lot of  system resources. Free for six months initially. A subscription fee has to be paid for updating virus definitions. Disable the email scanner, since it will further slow down your computer. The corporate version has additional features

3. Avast  is also a free antivirus software and can detect most  viruses and Trojans

4. Kapersky Antivirus - users have reported that more viruses have been detected using this software than other antivirus software.

5. MacAfee antivirus is also popular, but it takes up a lot of system memory and is not free. Other protection tools like buffer overflow protection are bundled with it.

Online virus scanners can also be used, but they take a very long time to load if  you have a slow internet connection. 2 antivirus software's should not be used simultaneously on the computer, since they may be incompatible. If  the free trial offer expires, uninstall the software and install a free software.
